Cheesemongers Unite Print

We all know how horrendous 2020 was for our British cheesemakers. In April 2020 restaurants were forced to close, leaving untold amounts of British artisan cheese stacked to the rafters in maturing rooms all across the British Isles. Our British cheese heritage was under serious threat, with cheesemakers faced with the heart-breaking prospect of closing their doors for good. Then came the great British cheesemongers, reaching out to help pull our cheesemakers out of the trenches, clearing their counters of continental cheese to make way for an exclusively British cheese range.

Thoroughly embracing the “Buy More British” spirit, families turned cheese into a weekly treat, British cheeseboards were delivered up and down the country and online events were coordinated, with virtual cheese tastings frequently appearing on our social media feeds. Never have I been so proud of my industry. So many came together for the collective good to ensure the survival of the British farmhouse cheese industry. We’re still not out of the woods, but we’re a long way from where we were many months ago.

We wanted to mark this moment so we can look back in years to come and reflect on the good that was done. So, we teamed up with the very talented @boudicaillustations to create an illustration that we hope encapsulates the time.
